North Island Weather Event Project

The North Island Weather Event Fund was established by the Ministry for Primary Industries to support the recovery of rural communities and primary industries affected by the North Island weather events, including Cyclone Gabrielle that caused unprecedented flooding and damage across parts of the North Island In early 2023.

RWNZ’s NIWE programme had two phases.

1) Hosting community events for wellbeing and connectedness in areas affected by North Island Weather Events including Northland, Greater Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Tairawhiti, Hawke’s Bay and Wairarapa.

2) Organising pastoral care support and/or visits to rural families affected by North Island Weather Events.

We have put together a report which includes recommendations for Government to improve its preparation, response and recovery measures in rural communities, for adverse events.
