RWNZ Centennial

Celebrate 100 years with us

Our beginnings

Rural Women New Zealand, originally known as the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, was founded in July 1925 in a search for community and friendship.

It all began when a number of farmers’ wives were on holiday in Wellington while their husbands attended the Farmers’ Union Conference. They shared their experiences of the often hard and lonely times on the farm with each other. Stories of women’s loneliness, illness, and lack of support saw a group of 16 women found the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union to improve support systems for their fellow rural women.

The ‘Rural Women’ Rose

Celebrate 100 years of Rural Women NZ with the brand new ‘Rural Women’ rose. Created by renowned rose growers Matthews Nurseries Ltd. The floribunda rose, displaying clusters of soft lilac hued blooms will be ready for planting from late June.

Centennial Activities and Events

We are planning Centennial Activities and Events all over the country from July to celebrate this exciting milestone. As these events are confirmed they will be added here.
