We were pleased to see the IER Panel’s Report had noted our submission regarding voting in elections and removing barriers to participation.
In our response to the report recommendation regarding future-proofing special voting provisions, we reiterated that election services must take account of the erratic nature of mail delivery to ensure postal voting is a truly effective method of receiving ballot papers.
While online voting was out of scope for this review, RWNZ pointed out that use of the internet as a potential tool for elections in the future will need to take account of connectivity issues (inconsistent coverage, reliability and capacity) for the rural sector.
