BOARDING BURSARIES

Secondary School Boarding Bursary

The Secondary School Boarding bursary is available for students entering year 9 or year 10 (third or fourth form) and who must live away from home in order to attend secondary school.  This bursary is awarded for to up to four years per recipient, to the value of $900 per year.  Applications close on the 30th of September; late applications will not be considered.

Eligibility Criteria:

Open to NZ citizens. 
May be applied for on behalf of children entering year 9 or year 10 (3rd or 4th form).
Applications close: 30th September. 

Value: $900 per year, for up to four years

Applications must include:

– A letter outlining the need for financial assistance, written by a parent or principal caregiver.


– A character reference from a responsible officer of a Rural Women New Zealand Branch outlining the circumstances of the family and the need for assistance with the applicant’s education.


– A character reference from another responsible citizen to whom the applicant is known.


– A supporting letter from the principal or a current teacher.
Applications will be considered by the Rural Women New Zealand Bursary Committee, which is appointed by the National Board of Rural Women New Zealand. 

– Applications will be acknowledged by the National Office upon receipt.  Applications will be treated as confidential and are subject to the provisions of the Privacy Act.

Applicants will be notified of the Bursary Committee’s decision which will be final, and no correspondence will be entered into.  Annual bursary payments will be made to successful applicants in April, upon receipt of confirmation of secondary school enrolment for the year. Payment will be made directly to the principal caregiver, who must advise Rural Women New Zealand immediately if the applicant leaves school or is no longer boarding away from home.  Where a successful applicant does not complete their school year a proportional refund of the bursary payment may be required.

Reports on the applicant’s progress throughout the school year would be gratefully received by Rural Women New Zealand.

Florence Polson One Year Secondary School Boarding Bursary

The Florence Polson One Year Secondary School Boarding Bursary is available to year 12 or year 13 students (6th or 7th form) to assist in funding their boarding school fees. A one-off grant will be awarded to the successful applicant, to the value of $1000.  Applications close on the 30th of September; late applications will not be considered.

The Nellie Schroder Boarding School Bursary is available to students entering year 12 or year 13 (6th or 7th form) to assist in funding their boarding school fees.  A one-off grant will be awarded to the successful applicant, to the value of $900.  This bursary is awarded biennially, in odd years.  Applications close on the 30th of September; late applications will not be considered.
