A Patriotic Call to Yarn 20-Oct-2014

October 20, 2014 10:54 pm

Join in the call to commemorate the 100th anniversary of New Zealand soldiers who died in World War I by creating handcrafted poppies. Vicky Appleby (pictured), Rural Women member in Waiouru has taken up the call to yarn!

A Patriotic Call to Yarn aims to make one red Flanders poppy for each soldier lost in the Great War – 18,166 total. These will be on display in the memorial area at the National Army Museum in Waiouru.

Our project will run for four years (to mirror the four years of the Great War) or until the total 18,166 poppies is reached.

We have two knitting patterns and one crochet pattern you can follow. You can download these below:

Completed poppies should be sent to National Office. We will then present all poppies on behalf of Rural Women New Zealand.
